(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) DOHA, Nov 4 (KUNA) -- The Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, on Tuesday expressed his country's pride in hosting the Second World Summit for Social Development, held thirty years after the inaugural summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1995.
In his opening speech at the summit, Sheikh Tamim Al-Thani said the summit reflects Qatar's firm belief in collective action to confront global challenges and promote social development, poverty eradication, and human dignity.
He stressed that social development is a necessity, not an option, and noted that as the event coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, it provides an opportunity to renew commitment to its Charter and to multilateral cooperation.
He highlighted Qatar's progress in social development, saying the launch of the Ministry of Social Development and Family's 2025-2030 strategy, aimed at building a cohesive and just society in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
He reaffirmed Qatar's partnership with the United Nations and its continued support for social development through the Qatar Fund for Development and other initiatives.
Qatar's Amir called for translating international pledges, including those made in the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration, into concrete action, and commended the adoption of the Doha Political Declaration as a roadmap for combating poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion.
He also underlined that lasting peace is essential for development, voicing solidarity with the Palestinian people and calling for increased international support for reconstruction efforts, while further condemning the atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region and urged a political solution to end the conflict.
Sheikh Tamim expressed confidence that this summit could be a turning point where discussions result in practical and effective steps, transforming the slogans of peace, social development and well-being into reality for everyone without discrimination (pickup previous)
