Trump defends push to continue nuclear weapon testing
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has defended his proposal to resume nuclear weapons testing, stating that America’s arsenal is sufficient to “blow up the world 150 times” and must be regularly tested to ensure reliability.
In an interview aired Sunday, Trump said the United States is currently the only country that does not test its nuclear weapons and suggested that resuming tests would align with other nations’ practices.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright clarified that the planned tests would be non-critical exercises, not full-scale nuclear detonations, and would form part of a broader modernization program.
Trump’s claims that Russia and China are secretly conducting nuclear tests have been challenged, as both countries’ last confirmed nuclear tests were decades ago. Chinese and Russian officials have urged the US to maintain the global moratorium on nuclear testing. Several Republican lawmakers, including Vice President J.D. Vance, have voiced support for non-detonative testing to preserve the reliability of the US arsenal.
