Qatar Deplores Massacres Committed in Sudan, Urges Action
(MENAFN) The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have taken control of El-Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state, prompting urgent appeals for a political resolution to end the country’s prolonged conflict.
“We express our collective shock at the horrific atrocities committed in the city of El-Fasher in Sudan’s Darfur region and reaffirm our condemnation of these acts in the strongest terms,” Tamim said during his opening remarks at the inauguration of the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha.
Local and international organizations report that the RSF seized El-Fasher on Oct. 26 and carried out ethnic-based massacres against civilians. Analysts warn the assault could deepen the geographical fragmentation of Sudan.
“Sudan has endured the horrors of this conflict for over two and a half years. It is time to bring it to an end and reach a political solution that safeguards Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” the Qatari emir added.
The Sudanese army and the RSF have been embroiled in civil war since April 15, 2023, leaving thousands dead, millions displaced, and sparking one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
On the Gaza Strip crisis, the Qatari emir highlighted the urgent need for global action, stressing that international support is required “to address the catastrophic consequences” of two years of Israeli aggression. He urged the world to “redouble its efforts and provide support to the Palestinian people for reconstruction and to meet their essential needs.”
“Social development cannot be achieved without peace and stability,” he emphasized.
The three-day UN summit in Doha is expected to host leaders and representatives from over 200 member states and organizations, focusing on global strategies for poverty eradication, social inclusion, and advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
