Peru Severs Diplomatic Relations with Mexico
(MENAFN) Peru has severed diplomatic relations with Mexico, Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela announced Monday, citing interference in domestic affairs after Mexico granted asylum to a former Peruvian prime minister.
De Zela said Betssy Chavez, who served as prime minister under former President Pedro Castillo and faces prosecution for an alleged coup attempt in December 2022, is currently being sheltered at the Mexican embassy’s residence in Lima.
"In response to this unfriendly act, and considering the repeated instances in which the current and former presidents of that country (Mexico) have interfered in Peru's internal affairs, the Peruvian government has decided, as of today, to break diplomatic relations with Mexico," he said.
The announcement marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the two nations, which have repeatedly clashed over political asylum and public comments by Mexican leaders on Peru’s political crisis.
