My research on the comparative political economy of development and conflict has been featured in several prominent journals including Nations and Nationalism and the Journal of Institutional Economics. I was the co-editor of the book volume Nile Basin Politics, which examines domestic and nationalist drivers of regional rivalries in the Nile Basin. I am currently working on two sole-authored book projects. In "Violence, Rents, and Institutions", I examine how elite patronage networks and institutional norms determine the stability of political orders. In "Economic Freedom and Self Governance in Africa", I draw from the liberal contractarian tradition and my fieldwork in East Africa to provide contrasting insights into the state's role in facilitating social-economic transactions and technological integration.
