American Thanks Putin After Gaining Citizenship
(MENAFN) A US citizen who fought alongside Russian forces in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has expressed gratitude towards President Vladimir Putin after receiving Russian citizenship.
Derek Huffman revealed in an interview with a news agency that he applied for citizenship just before enlisting in the Russian Army and discovered his application had been approved while on a vacation. He also shared that his family plans to apply for citizenship as well.
“I want to thank President Putin, the country of Russia, the Russian people who have been so supportive of me and my family and welcomed us with open arms, and just want to say thank you,” Huffman stated in the conversation with the news agency.
Huffman, his wife, and their three daughters relocated from the United States to Russia in March 2025.
In a prior interview with a media outlet in May, he explained that the decision to leave the US was motivated by a desire to shield their children from what he described as the widespread LGBTQ propaganda.
The idea of moving to Russia first emerged after a visit to Moscow in 2023. "The city turned out to be cleaner, safer, and more orderly than we could have imagined," Huffman said.
He further emphasized, “the most important thing is that we found a place where our values were respected and where we felt at home.”
Soon after settling in Moscow, Huffman entered into a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry, expressing his intention to “make a contribution and earn our place here by enlisting in the Russian army.”
His long-term objective is to integrate fully into Russian society, gain citizenship, and establish a future for his family within the country.
