Trump Rejects Hungary’s Request Regarding Russian Oil

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has turned down Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s appeal to spare Hungary from sanctions imposed on Russian oil.

Orban explained in an interview with a radio on Friday that he intends to convince Trump during his forthcoming trip to Washington to provide Hungary with relief from the restrictions targeting Russian energy firms Rosneft and Lukoil, which supply oil to Central Europe.

The United States recently added these two companies to its blacklist, accusing Moscow of failing to engage seriously in the Ukraine peace process. Hungary has repeatedly emphasized that Russian oil and gas are crucial for its energy stability.

Later, while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed that Orban “has asked for an exemption, but we have not granted one.”

He added, “He is a friend of mine,” while hinting that journalists move on to other topics.

Orban told the radio that Hungary, being landlocked, has no feasible alternatives to Russian oil, and that substituting it could trigger an economic crisis.

“We have to make the Americans understand this peculiar situation... if we want them to allow exemptions from the American sanctions against Russia,” he said.

The Hungarian prime minister also mentioned that he will lead a “large delegation” of ministers, economic representatives, and security advisers to Washington on November 7 to finalize an economic cooperation package with the US.

He emphasized, however, that any agreement would hinge on continued access to Russian oil and gas.
