(MENAFN) Newly released Senate documents indicate that the FBI, under former US President Joe Biden’s administration, investigated hundreds of Republican individuals and organizations as part of a probe into alleged 2020 election interference.

The investigation, known as “Arctic Frost,” was initiated in April 2022 by then-FBI Director Christopher Wray. It later formed the basis for a criminal case against President Donald Trump, centered on claims that he attempted to overturn the 2020 election results, which he contends were affected by widespread voter fraud. The case, overseen by then-special counsel Jack Smith under Attorney General Merrick Garland, was ultimately dismissed in 2024 following Trump’s reelection.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley disclosed 197 subpoenas connected to the probe, reportedly obtained from whistleblowers. According to his office, the subpoenas targeted 34 individuals and 163 businesses, seeking communications, testimony, and financial records linked to at least 430 Republican figures and entities.

The records requested correspondence with major media outlets, including CBS, Fox News, Fox Business, Newsmax, and Sinclair, as well as communications involving White House advisers and “any member, employee or agent of the Legislative Branch of the US Government.” The documents also included requests for “preliminary toll analysis” on several prominent Republican lawmakers.

Grassley characterized the investigation as a tool for partisan enforcement, stating: “Arctic Frost was the vehicle by which partisan FBI agents and DOJ prosecutors could improperly investigate the entire Republican political apparatus,” and argued that the documents reveal the deliberate “weaponization” of law enforcement against political opponents.
