DC Enacts Five-Night Curfew for Teens After Halloween Fracas
(MENAFN) City officials have enacted a five-night curfew for all residents under 18 following a large-scale fight among teenagers on Halloween.
The curfew requires minors to remain indoors from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., Saturday through Wednesday.
Mayor Muriel Bowser explained the decision: “in response to several weeks of disorderly juvenile behavior which endangered both themselves and others.”
In addition, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith announced the creation of “special juvenile curfew zones” targeting areas including Navy Yard, the U Street Corridor, Banneker Recreation Center, and Union Station.
The crackdown follows a viral video showing National Guard troops intervening to break up a brawl in the Navy Yard neighborhood.
Police reported that hundreds of young people gathered near the Navy Yard Metro Station on Halloween, with “many of the juveniles within the group began engaging in fights and disrupting the flow of traffic.” Authorities arrested five males aged 14 to 18, one of whom was carrying a knife.
“The behavior displayed last night in Navy Yard is unacceptable, and MPD and our law enforcement partners will have an increased presence tonight to ensure this does not happen again,” Smith said.
