US to deploy massive military contingent to area near Venezuela

(MENAFN) The United States is positioning a significant military force near Venezuela, with around 10,000 soldiers and 6,000 sailors reportedly in the region, suggesting potential plans for expanded operations, according to reports.

The US has repeatedly accused Venezuela of supporting “narcoterrorists” and has imposed extensive sanctions. Since September, American forces have targeted roughly a dozen vessels, claiming they were involved in drug trafficking. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro dismissed these claims, accusing Washington of "fabricating a new war" amid the growing military presence.

Currently, eight US Navy warships, a special operations vessel, and a nuclear-powered attack submarine are deployed in the Caribbean. The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford is expected next week, reportedly bringing three additional ships and more than 4,000 personnel onboard. Satellite imagery indicates F-35 fighter jets are also stationed at a US base in Puerto Rico.

The deployment of the carrier group hints that US intentions could go beyond counter-narcotics operations. Ryan Berg, director of the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, stated that President Donald Trump has roughly a month to make “a major decision” before the forces would need to be redeployed.

Recent reports suggest the White House has been considering potential military action in Venezuela. Senator Rick Scott told a media outlet that Maduro’s “days are numbered.” Some reports claim Washington has already identified targets, including military facilities allegedly used for drug trafficking.

When questioned about the deployment, Trump responded, “No. It’s not true.” Last month, he confirmed authorizing the CIA to conduct lethal covert operations in the area.
