S. Korea, Singapore Forge Stronger Cooperation in Trade, Defense
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Sunday unveiled a strategic partnership between their countries, aiming to boost cooperation in defense, trade, and technology.
The announcement came at a joint press conference in Seoul following summit talks during Wong’s official visit to South Korea, South Korean media reported.
Lee emphasized the shared traits of both nations, stating: "Our two countries have many similarities, in that we have both achieved remarkable growth based on human capital and an open free trade order despite limited land, scarce resources, and challenging geopolitical environment."
Reflecting on the discussions, Wong said: “President Lee and I just now reaffirmed the excellent state of our relationship, and the vast potential for us to do more together,” according to media.
The leaders outlined plans to intensify cooperation in security, defense, artificial intelligence (AI), advanced technologies, people-to-people exchanges, and tackling transnational crimes, including online scams.
As part of the partnership, both countries will jointly address pressing global challenges such as climate change and cross-border crimes, responding to shifts in the international order that have historically underpinned global growth and prosperity, according to the South Korean presidential office.
Additionally, the two governments signed multiple memorandums of understanding covering digital collaboration, logistics and shipping, culture and sports, healthcare, people-to-people exchanges, and AI safety.
