Trump unveils renovations to bathroom in Lincoln Bedroom

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has revealed updates to the bathroom in the Lincoln Bedroom as part of his ongoing White House renovation project. Sharing images online, Trump noted the previous 1940s art deco green tile style was “totally inappropriate for the Lincoln Era” and praised the new black-and-white marble as “very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and, in fact, could be the marble that was originally there!”

This renovation is the latest in a series of changes Trump has made to the presidential residence this year. In October, he oversaw the demolition of the East Wing to create a new multi-million-dollar ballroom. The bathroom itself is part of Lincoln’s office and cabinet room, originally refurbished by former President Harry Truman during a major post-war renovation.

Previously, Lincoln’s office and bedroom walls featured green and gold wallpaper, according to historical records.

Trump’s remodel now includes gold accents on fixtures such as the sink, bathtub faucet, and shower door, as well as a chandelier. The White House confirmed that the project was privately funded, with no cost to taxpayers.

Critics, including conservation groups and political opponents, have expressed concern over the president’s changes. Trump had earlier insisted that his East Wing ballroom “would not interfere with the current building,” though he later announced the demolition of the existing structure. He stated the construction was financed by himself and private donors.

Conservationists have argued that public review should have been sought to preserve the White House’s classical style. Officials pushed back, labeling the criticism as “unhinged leftists” over Trump’s “visionary addition of a grand, privately funded ballroom to the White House – a bold, necessary addition.”

Other alterations include replacing the Rose Garden’s lawn with stone in August and adding extensive gilded elements in the Oval Office, including gold-framed mirrors, additional portraits, and a gold leaf on the presidential seal.

The latest bathroom renovation has drawn political backlash amid the ongoing government shutdown, now in its second month. Democratic leaders criticized Trump for prioritizing White House aesthetics over healthcare disputes central to the shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote online, “Donald Trump actually cares more about his toilet than he does about fixing your healthcare.”

Speaking at an event on Saturday, former President Barack Obama remarked that Trump has focused more on “critical issues, like paving over the Rose Garden so folks don’t get mud on their shoes and gold plating the Oval Office and building a $300m ballroom” than resolving the shutdown. “If you can’t visit a doctor, don’t worry. He will save you a dance,” Obama added.
