Iran Deplores Massacres Committed Against Civilians in Sudan
(MENAFN) Iran's top diplomat has issued a sharp rebuke following deadly assaults on civilians in Sudan's embattled North Darfur capital, as the nation's civil war reaches a critical juncture.
Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, denounced the recent wave of violence and civilian casualties in El Fasher during a Friday telephone discussion with his Sudanese counterpart, Mohieldin Salim, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed in an official statement.
During the conversation, Araghchi emphasized Tehran's backing for Sudan's sovereignty and territorial boundaries, according to the ministry's release.
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced Sunday they had seized the Sudanese military's command center in the blockaded El Fasher following the national army's retreat—marking a pivotal shift in the nation's brutal 30-month civil conflict that has sparked mounting concerns over an escalating humanitarian emergency.
Sudanese authorities reported Wednesday that RSF combatants have slaughtered over 2,000 civilians since taking control of the city.
