UNGA Approves Draft Resolution Pressuring U.S. to Lift Embargo on Cuba
(MENAFN) The UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday approved a draft resolution calling on the United States to lift its decades-long economic, commercial, and financial embargo on Cuba, a policy in place since 1962.
The resolution passed with 165 votes in favor, seven against, and 12 abstentions. Those opposing the measure included Argentina, Hungary, Israel, North Macedonia, Paraguay, Ukraine, and the United States.
The text reaffirmed the Assembly’s appeal to all UN member states to avoid enacting or enforcing laws and measures mentioned in the resolution’s preamble. It urged nations to act “in conformity with their obligations under the UN Charter and international law, which, inter alia, reaffirm the freedom of trade and navigation.”
Additionally, the draft called on member states “that have and continue to apply such laws and measures to take the necessary steps to repeal or invalidate them as soon as possible in accordance with their legal regime.”
The UNGA has passed a similar non-binding resolution every year since 1992, consistently urging Washington to end its embargo on Havana. Each time, the measure has received overwhelming global support.
