French Socialists Threaten No-Confidence Motion Over Tax Policies
(MENAFN) The leader of France's Socialist Party cautioned that the government's refusal to make concessions on “tax justice” and its dismissal of a wealth tax might represent a “casus belli,” potentially leading to a no-confidence motion.
Olivier Faure, speaking to a French broadcaster over the weekend, stated, “By the end of next week, we’ll know whether we’re heading toward dissolution or not.”
He emphasized that he anticipates some compromise from the government regarding tax justice as the National Assembly prepares to examine the revenue section of the 2026 budget.
Faure stressed that rejecting a wealth tax, or even a modified version, would amount to a “casus belli.”
He also noted that, if a dissolution is imminent, legislative elections could occur in November.
Meanwhile, the Socialists’ parliamentary chief, Boris Vallaud, advocated for greater tax justice in 2026 during an interview with a broadcaster on Monday.
He remarked, "Go explain to the French that because we didn’t want to—or weren’t able to—ensure more tax justice, medical deductibles will increase, housing benefits will be frozen, the minimum income support will be frozen, and disability benefits will be frozen."
