Argentine’s leader’s party secures victory in parliamentary elections

(MENAFN) Argentine President Javier Milei’s ruling party, La Libertad Avanza, won Sunday’s parliamentary elections with 40.8% of the vote, based on preliminary results with 96% of ballots counted.

Milei’s party outpaced the Peronist opposition, Fuerza Patria, which received 24.5% of votes, achieving key victories in major regions including Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe, and Mendoza.

The elections were held to renew nearly half of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies (127 of 257) and one-third of the Senate (24 of 72), serving as a critical gauge of public support for President Milei’s administration. The outcome will shape his ability to push major reforms through Congress.

La Libertad Avanza secured 64 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. Beginning December 10, the party will hold a total of 94 of the 257 lower house seats. Although still short of an outright majority, this level of representation is sufficient to sustain presidential vetoes and counter potential impeachment threats from opposition groups.

Celebrating the results, President Milei stated, "Today has been a historic day." He added, "The Argentine people have left behind decadence and chosen progress.
Today we have passed the tipping point. Today begins the construction of a great Argentina."

Milei emphasized the importance of the new Congress in driving his agenda: "The new Congress will be fundamental to ensuring the change of direction." He further outlined plans for major reforms, saying, "Over the next two years, we must advance the reformist path we have begun," and stressed that these initiatives are essential to "consolidate Argentina's growth and takeoff."
