N. Korea says testing of hypersonic weapon shows defense advancement
(MENAFN) North Korea on Thursday confirmed that a hypersonic weapon test carried out the previous day served as "clear proof" of the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance its self-defense capabilities, according to reports.
The test, conducted by the Missile Administration of North Korea, was supervised by Pak Jong Chon, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Kim Jong Sik, first vice department director of the WPK Central Committee, and Jang Chang Ha, general director of the Missile Administration, as stated by reports.
South Korea’s military reported on Wednesday that Pyongyang launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea.
According to reports, the hypersonic missiles were fired from Ryokpho District in Pyongyang Municipality "toward the northeast direction and hit the target point on the tableland of Kwesang Peak in Orang County, North Hamgyong Province."
"The new weapon system was tested as part of the defense capability development program to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of strategic deterrence against potential enemies," the North Korean officials said.
Pak Jong Chon emphasized that Pyongyang’s actions are "evidently aimed to continue to bolster the war deterrent and their purpose is to strengthen self-defense."
The US Forces Korea (USFK) condemned the missile launches and criticized North Korea’s "relentless pursuit of long-range missile capabilities," according to reports.
Washington denounced these actions as "unlawful and destabilizing" and urged the country to refrain from further violations of the UN Security Council resolutions, as cited by reports.
