(MENAFN) The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) has cautioned voters against turning to AI chatbots for political advice ahead of the upcoming national elections, warning that such tools provide unreliable and potentially biased information.

According to the agency, AI-generated recommendations disproportionately favored two major opposition blocs — the right-wing Party for Freedom (PVV) and the left-wing GroenLinks-PvdA alliance — which together accounted for 56% of chatbot responses. This bias stood in stark contrast to the Netherlands’ highly fragmented 15-party parliament, the AP noted. Polls suggest the two blocs could together win just over one-third of the vote in the October 29 election.

The report also revealed that some political parties, including the center-right CDA, were “almost never mentioned, even when the user’s input exactly matches the positions of one of these parties.”

“Chatbots may seem like clever tools, but as a voting aid, they consistently fail,” said Monique Verdier, the authority’s vice-chair. She described the technology’s functioning as “unclear and difficult to verify.”

Verdier warned that the use of AI for voting advice could push citizens toward parties that do not accurately represent their political beliefs. “We therefore warn against using AI chatbots for voting advice,” she added.

The AP said it tested four major chatbots — which it did not name — and found that they sometimes recommended one of the two main parties even when users explicitly provided the campaign platform of a smaller group.

The upcoming election, called after the collapse of the previous right-wing coalition when the PVV withdrew, is expected to determine whether the Netherlands moves toward an all-conservative government or a more centrist alliance.
