Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, three US cities with direct connections to the country and with high interest in visiting Costa Rica, classified as priority by the Costa Rican Tourism Board, hosted a Costa Rican tourism promotion mission since August.

The itinerary of the mission, led by the tourism business organization Proimagen Costa Rica, included San Antonio, with the goal of opening new opportunities in the US market. Residents can fly to nearby cities such as Houston or Monterrey, thanks to a recently opened flight from this Mexican city.

Nature, sun, and beaches

“Residents of cities in Texas and California deeply value outdoor experiences, nature, sun, and beaches-all of which Costa Rica offers in abundance. In both regions, there is a great passion for activities such as hiking, visiting natural parks, and living a healthy lifestyle, which creates a strong connection with the eco-tourism and adventure tourism that characterizes our country,” said Christian Doñas, president of Proimagen Costa Rica.

Good numbers

According to ICT data, 2,661,488 tourists entered the country by air in 2024, representing 190,388 more arrivals than in 2023, equivalent to a 7.7% increase.

In the first seven months of 2025, Costa Rica received 1,075,043 tourists from the United States by air, consolidating this country as the main market for the country. Arrivals from the United States represent 55.54% of total arrivals to Costa Rica and 81.49% of arrivals from North America.

The seasonality of the U.S. market is marked by the months of December through March and June through July, when the largest number of arrivals to Costa Rica are found. Their average daily spending in the country is approximately $295.

The U.S. tour included the following cities:

-Houston

-San Antonio

-San Francisco

-Los Angeles
