Bulgaria signals willingness to open its airspace for Putin’s aircraft

(MENAFN) Bulgaria has expressed readiness to allow Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aircraft to pass through its airspace if he travels to Budapest for a possible meeting with US President Donald Trump, Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev stated Monday.

Speaking to reporters during an EU Foreign Affairs Council session in Luxembourg, Georgiev noted that logistical details would only be addressed once the Trump-Putin meeting is officially scheduled.

"Let the date be announced first, and then we can talk about technical details. As far as I know, there is no confirmed date yet," he said.

He emphasized that Sofia would not obstruct any diplomatic efforts aimed at securing peace in Ukraine.

"When efforts are made for peace, it is only logical that all sides contribute to making such a meeting possible," Georgiev added. "How else could the meeting take place if one of the participants cannot get there?"

Georgiev also reiterated Bulgaria's backing for the European Union’s 19th sanctions package against Russia, expected to be approved later this week, which includes discussions on further tariffs targeting Russian goods. He stressed that while hopes for lasting peace in Ukraine remain, Russia continues to display aggressive behavior.

Addressing concerns about the so-called “shadow fleet” of Russian oil tankers operating in the Black Sea, Georgiev said: "Russian activity in this direction is significant. We are working with Romania and Türkiye through our mine clearance group, and all movements in this area are under increased surveillance."

Last week, Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reach an agreement with Russia, urging both sides to pause fighting along current front lines. Zelenskyy subsequently reaffirmed that Ukraine would not accept any concessions to Moscow.
