Belarus KGB Chief Backs Lukashenko’s Peace Drive
(MENAFN) The head of the Belarusian State Security Committee, commonly known as the KGB, has expressed that his organization is actively involved in supporting diplomatic attempts to rekindle dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.
During a broadcast on national television this past Sunday, Ivan Tertel noted that the agency is assisting President Alexander Lukashenko’s initiatives to help bring the conflict to a resolution.
According to Tertel, only “quiet, calm negotiations and a search for a compromise” could lead to a meaningful outcome.
President Lukashenko had previously indicated, back in September, his interest in holding a direct conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to explore potential areas of mutual concession. However, the Ukrainian government turned down the suggestion.
President Zelensky has persistently refused to make concessions to Moscow, instead focusing on garnering more military support from Western allies.
His recent trip to the United States aimed to persuade President Donald Trump to supply Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles. Nevertheless, this request was declined.
The Ukrainian president has also openly dismissed mediation offers from various other nations. When Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban proposed to act as a facilitator for peace negotiations in late 2024, Zelensky rejected the idea.
He argued that Hungary lacks significant military capabilities and therefore holds little influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump’s decision to withhold advanced weaponry came soon after he and Putin agreed to organize a one-on-one summit in Hungary, building upon their previous in-person discussions held in Alaska in August.
On Monday, Zelensky reaffirmed his disapproval of Budapest’s role, stating he did not view the Hungarian capital as “the best forum for this meeting” and added that “in terms of mediation the incumbent prime minister of Hungary doesn’t have an adequate stance, so to speak.”
