Sudanese Army Leader Signals Readiness for Dialogue
(MENAFN) The head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stated on Saturday that the military is open to negotiations aimed at efforts to “end the war and restore Sudan’s unity and dignity.”
Speaking in Atbara, a city in northern Sudan, al-Burhan made these remarks while expressing sympathy to the family of Army Maj. Muzammil Abdullah, who recently lost his life during clashes in El-Fasher.
Al-Burhan clarified that no discussions are currently in progress with the Quartet — US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates — or with any other entities.
He reaffirmed that the military “will keep fighting the enemy wherever it is found,” rejecting accusations that the army is targeting particular ethnic groups or regions.
He emphasized that individuals who sincerely desire peace are encouraged to come forward. However, he warned that “imposing peace or a government on the people against their will is unacceptable,” making it clear that any solution must respect the wishes of the Sudanese population.
These comments were made just before scheduled Quartet meetings in New York, which aim to promote a peaceful resolution to Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
Hostilities between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have persisted since April 2023.
According to the UN and local officials, the violence has resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 individuals and forced 14 million people to flee their homes.
However, studies conducted by American universities suggest a far higher death toll, estimating approximately 130,000 fatalities.
In July, the Sudanese Founding Alliance — a group led by the RSF — declared the establishment of a rival administration headed by RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, deepening the country’s political crisis.
