Egypt reaches understanding with Iran, IAEA to resolve nuclear issue
(MENAFN) Egypt has reached an understanding with Iran, the United States, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to maintain dialogue and pursue joint efforts aimed at resolving the long-standing Iranian nuclear issue, according to official statements released Saturday.
Reports from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that the country’s top diplomat held separate phone discussions with his Iranian and American counterparts, as well as with the IAEA director general, to explore potential steps toward a breakthrough. The ministry described the talks as part of ongoing efforts to promote “security, stability, and de-escalation in the region,” while also reinforcing the progress made under the Cairo Agreement signed between Iran and the IAEA in September 2025. That agreement, mediated by Egypt, restored cooperation between the two sides after several months of suspension.
The discussions reportedly underlined the “need to continue working toward de-escalation and confidence-building” and to “create conditions for reviving negotiations between Iran and the US to reach a comprehensive agreement on the nuclear file that addresses the interests of all parties and contributes to regional security and stability.”
The statement concluded that all sides agreed to “continue following up on efforts and communications and to study the ideas proposed to achieve the hoped-for breakthrough.”
These consultations took place shortly after Iran declared that it was no longer bound by United Nations restrictions on its nuclear program, following the expiration of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 on October 18, 2025.
Resolution 2231, which remained in force for a decade, had endorsed the 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and the P5+1 nations — the United States, China, Russia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom — under which Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for relief from international sanctions.
