UN mission in Kabul hails truce deal between Afghanistan, Pakistan

(MENAFN) The United Nations mission in Kabul has expressed support for the newly agreed ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan, describing it as a vital step toward de-escalation following recent deadly border clashes.

According to an official statement released Thursday, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) commended both sides for agreeing to a 48-hour truce, which took effect after a series of violent confrontations along the border since Tuesday night.

UNAMA urged both nations to prioritize the safety of civilians and to halt the cycle of violence. "To bring a lasting end to hostilities to protect civilians and prevent further loss of life, and reminds all parties of their obligations under international law to comply with the key principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution to prevent civilian casualties," the mission said.

Reports indicate that at least 18 civilians were killed and dozens more wounded on the Afghan side during the recent clashes.

The violence marks one of the most severe flare-ups between the two countries since 2021, when the Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan.

Tensions reportedly escalated last week after Afghan authorities accused Pakistan of violating their airspace, sparking cross-border exchanges late Saturday. The situation was eventually brought under control following mediation by Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
