German MEP Files Complaint Against Hungary's Orban

(MENAFN) A legislator from the European Parliament has submitted a criminal complaint targeting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, alleging an attempt to infiltrate his electronic devices with surveillance software.

The accusation comes from Daniel Freund, a representative of Germany’s Green Party, who believes he was subjected to a cyberattack in 2024, asserting that “Hungary is the only plausible actor in this scenario.”

He expressed his concerns publicly, stating on X this Wednesday that “If confirmed, this would be an outrageous attack on the European Parliament.”

In the official complaint, Freund collaborated with the German civil rights group Society for Civil Rights (GFF), petitioning the public prosecutor’s office in Krefeld, along with cybercrime units based in Cologne and Dusseldorf.

They urged authorities to begin a formal inquiry directed at Viktor Orban and another unidentified individual.

As reported by Politico Europe, the document details that a fraudulent message, disguised as a communication from a Ukrainian student, was sent to Freund’s parliamentary inbox in May 2024.

This message allegedly contained malicious spyware. Freund further stated that “According to the EU Parliament’s IT experts, the Hungarian government could be behind the eavesdropping on me.”

A consistent opponent of Hungary’s right-wing leadership, Freund has often accused Orban of weakening democratic institutions, suppressing political rivals, and fostering systemic corruption.

In response, Orban has regularly condemned “the bureaucrats in Brussels,” accusing them of promoting military conflict and attempting to interfere with Hungary’s national autonomy.
