China Opposes UK Sanctions on Companies Linked to Russia
(MENAFN) China has lodged "stern representations" with the UK following London's move to sanction 11 Chinese companies accused of aiding Russia’s energy sector and providing critical defense equipment, according to state media reports Thursday.
A spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy in the UK stated on Wednesday, "China firmly opposes these sanctions," and called on London to "immediately" lift the measures.
The UK imposed sanctions on both Russian and Chinese entities on Wednesday, aiming to escalate pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. British Treasury chief Rachel Reeves said the government was pursuing "targeted" actions against firms in China and India that continue to facilitate Russian oil exports to global markets.
China dismissed the UK’s sanctions as unilateral moves lacking a foundation in international law. The embassy spokesperson warned that these sanctions "undermine the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises."
Regarding the Ukraine crisis, the spokesperson emphasized, "China has upheld an objective and impartial position, remained committed to promoting peace talks, and strictly regulated the export of dual-use items in accordance with laws and regulations."
The embassy added that normal trade and cooperation between Chinese and Russian businesses "should not be interfered with or affected," rejecting any "attempt at blame-shifting or smearing."
The spokesperson concluded, "We urge the UK to immediately rectify its wrongdoing and revoke the sanctions against the relevant Chinese entities. Any action that harms China's interests will be met with a firm response."
