Syria Eyes Restoring Strategic Ties with Russia

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa declared on Wednesday that his country is ready to renew its longstanding alliance with Russia, emphasizing the importance of their historic cooperation and mutual strategic interests.

“We respect all the past agreements and the great history with Russia, and we try to restore the nature of these relations,” Sharaa stated during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The Syrian leader underlined the significance of Russian support to his country, particularly in vital sectors such as energy. “We have close relations with Russia, and a large part of Syria's energy sector depends on Russian expertise,” he noted.

Sharaa’s remarks come amid ongoing regional instability and shifting international alliances, as Damascus appears to be repositioning itself diplomatically. By reaffirming its commitment to Moscow, Syria signals a desire to strengthen its strategic partnerships and deepen economic and military cooperation with one of its most consistent allies.

The renewed dialogue also reflects a broader geopolitical recalibration as Russia seeks to bolster its influence in the Middle East, while Syria looks to attract investment and technical expertise to support its reconstruction efforts.
