Syrian President Pays Visit to Russia
(MENAFN) The Kremlin revealed on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will host Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa for his inaugural official trip to Russia.
According to a statement from the Kremlin, "The leaders intend to discuss the current state and future prospects of Russia-Syria ties in politics, trade and economy, and cultural and humanitarian affairs, as well as the recent developments in the Middle East."
The discussions are expected to span a broad spectrum of issues, highlighting both nations’ shared interests in political coordination, economic engagement, and cultural exchange.
The confirmation of this visit was previously announced by a news agency, which emphasized that Sharaa's objective is to realign the bilateral partnership and deepen cooperation in political and economic domains.
President Sharaa is also scheduled to engage with Syrian expatriates residing in Russia during his visit, underlining a commitment to maintaining ties with the diaspora community.
On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned in a meeting with Arab media representatives that Syria is interested in preserving Russian military installations on its soil.
However, he noted that these facilities may be adapted to meet evolving circumstances.
This information was reported by a Russian official state news outlet.
In a separate development earlier this year, President Putin and President Sharaa held a phone conversation in February, during which Putin reaffirmed Russia's support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political stability.
He also conveyed Russia's willingness to reevaluate existing agreements with the former Assad administration and reiterated calls for the removal of economic restrictions imposed on Syria.
This diplomatic visit follows the earlier trip of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak to Damascus on September 9, where he held discussions with high-ranking Syrian authorities about energy collaboration and humanitarian aid.
