Russia Labels Peru’s Presidential Transition an Internal Issue
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Russia characterized Peru’s recent presidential transition as an internal issue, expressing optimism that the new government will tackle the country’s urgent challenges effectively.
In an official statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Moscow “views the change of power in Peru as an internal matter for the country,” and extended its “best wishes to the country’s new leader” Jose Jeri, who took office following Congress’s impeachment of former President Dina Boluarte.
The ministry emphasized that Peru remains one of Russia’s “long-standing partners in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region,” highlighting that the two nations have sustained diplomatic ties for over 160 years.
“Moscow advocates for non-opportunistic, non-influenced bilateral relations based on equality and sovereignty, pragmatism and mutual consideration of national interests, and respect for the fundamental principles of international law,” the statement added.
The impeachment of President Boluarte by Peru’s Congress on October 10 came amid criticism of her administration’s failure to maintain public safety amid escalating crime and violence. According to the Peruvian Constitution, Jose Jeri, as congressional leader, will serve as interim president until the scheduled elections on April 12 next year.
