UN General Assembly Selects Fourteen Nations to Rights Council
(MENAFN) The United Nations General Assembly selected 14 countries on Tuesday to join the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council for three-year terms starting January 1.
The newly elected members are Angola, Egypt, Mauritius, South Africa, India, Iraq, Pakistan, Vietnam, Estonia, Slovenia, Chile, Ecuador, Italy, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The 47-member Human Rights Council holds the authority to review human rights situations worldwide and adopt non-binding resolutions addressing abuses when it deems necessary.
Under the rules set by the 2006 General Assembly resolution that established the Human Rights Council, member states are expected to consider each candidate’s human rights record, including their efforts to promote and protect human rights and any voluntary pledges or commitments made in that regard, when casting their votes.
