Gabon’s UDB Secures Majority in Gabon’s Legislative Elections

(MENAFN) The Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), the political party backing Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema, secured a commanding lead by capturing 102 out of 145 seats in the National Assembly during the country's recent legislative elections.

The outcome, released Tuesday by a government-run publication, reflects the results from both the first and second rounds of voting.

During the second round, held on Saturday, the UDB obtained 50 seats, adding to the 52 it had already secured in the initial round on September 27.

This total gives the party a substantial majority, accounting for approximately 70% of the parliamentary representation, as detailed in the report.

The Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), previously the ruling party and now aligned with President Nguema, obtained 16 seats overall—five from the first round and eleven from the second.

The Rally for the Fatherland and Modernity (RPM) succeeded in gaining three seats.

Meanwhile, the National Union (UN) and the Gabonese Social Democrats (SDG) each managed to claim two. Several other minor political groups won one seat apiece.

In addition, seven parliamentary members were elected as independents. However, four seats are yet to be decided due to elections not being held in the first round, according to the same report.

The definitive results are expected to be officially announced by the national electoral commission in the coming days.

Roughly 900,000 citizens were registered to participate in this round of voting, marking the first parliamentary elections since the 2023 military takeover that removed former President Ali Bongo from power.
