UDB Secures Parliamentary Majority in Gabon’s Elections
(MENAFN) The Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), the political party aligned with Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema, has secured a commanding majority in the country's parliamentary elections.
As reported on Tuesday by a state-run newspaper, the UDB clinched 102 out of 145 seats in the National Assembly following the completion of both the first and second rounds of voting.
The party gained 50 seats during the runoff held on Saturday and had already claimed 52 seats during the initial round on September 27.
This gives the UDB control of approximately 70% of the legislature, according to the official figures.
The former ruling party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), which now supports the current president, garnered a total of 16 seats—five in the first round and 11 in the second. Meanwhile, the Rally for the Fatherland and Modernity (RPM) obtained three seats.
Both the National Union (UN) and the Gabonese Social Democrats (SDG) secured two seats apiece.
Several minor political groups each succeeded in obtaining one seat. In addition, seven independent candidates managed to win parliamentary positions.
However, four seats are yet to be decided as voting could not be held in some constituencies during the first round.
The conclusive results are expected to be announced shortly by the national electoral commission.
Nearly 900,000 citizens of Gabon were eligible to participate in this pivotal legislative contest—the first to take place following the 2023 military takeover that removed ex-President Ali Bongo from power.
In a joint statement released Monday, regional observers from Benin, Guinea, Mauritania, and Togo remarked that the second round was conducted in a "calm and serene atmosphere," though they noted a general "lack of enthusiasm" among the electorate.
