Egypt Prepares Hosting Global Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh

(MENAFN) Egypt is preparing to convene a global peace summit in the coastal resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday.

The high-level gathering will be jointly presided over by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to a statement released by the presidency, this conference will bring together heads of state and top officials from more than 20 nations.

The primary goal is to “end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East, and usher in a new phase of regional security and stability,” the statement emphasized.

The event is described as part of a broader initiative, stating that it “comes in light of US President Trump's vision for achieving peace in the region and his relentless efforts to end conflicts around the world.”

This highlights the role Trump has played in pushing forward proposals to resolve long-standing disputes in the region.

On Wednesday, Trump declared that both Israel and Hamas had consented to the initial phase of a 20-point framework he presented on September 29.

This first step includes a ceasefire in Gaza, the liberation of all Israeli hostages in return for about 2,000 Palestinian detainees, and a phased retreat of Israeli troops from the entire Gaza region. This agreement officially took effect at noon local time (0900 GMT) on Friday.

The subsequent stage of this proposal involves setting up a new administrative structure in Gaza that excludes Hamas.

It also proposes the creation of a joint security force made up of Palestinians and personnel from Arab and Islamic nations, along with the complete disarmament of Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have resulted in the deaths of over 67,600 Palestinians in the region—predominantly women and children—leaving the area devastated and largely uninhabitable.
