Toby Murray is a Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. His expertise is in cyber security. He has won various awards for his research, which studies how to build highly secure computer systems, including the 2021 Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia. Toby regularly provides expert commentary on cyber security topics to the media, including The Conversation, and has appeared on ABC TV's 7:30, Schwartz Media's 7am podcast, Channel 9's Today Extra TV program.
Toby obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science from the University of Oxford in 2011. He previously worked for the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), between 2002 and 2006; and National ICT Australia (NICTA), between 2010 and 2016. He is currently the Director of the Defence Science Institute, which stimulates and facilitates Defence R&D between Victorian and Tasmanian Universities, SMEs, Defence industry, and Government.
