Bundestag President Reaffirms Support For Ukraine

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Bundestag President Julia Klockner said this during a joint press conference with Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk in Berlin on Monday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"For three and a half years, Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's brutal assault that violates international order. This war deliberately targets civilian infrastructure – towns, villages, hospitals, kindergartens, and schools – in a campaign of terror against the Ukrainian population. Let me say it again: in difficult times, we recognize our obligation to help defend not only Ukraine but also the values we all share. Therefore, there will be constant support [from Germany], including that approved by the Bundestag," Klockner said.

She noted that this support includes military, humanitarian, and political assistance. Klockner added that a day earlier, she and Stefanchuk had visited her home region of Rhineland-Palatinate, specifically Idar-Oberstein, where Ukrainian soldiers have been training on heavy equipment at the Artillery School since May 20, 2022.

"Defending our democracy requires more than financial resources – it's also about ensuring the safety of soldiers. I want to stress once again: Germany is saving lives in Ukraine by providing training, including at Idar-Oberstein. This is a very tangible contribution to the fight against this war of aggression," Klockner said.

She also praised Ukraine's parliament for continuing to operate during wartime and underlined the importance of informing the public that holding elections is currently impossible. She also discussed with Stefanchuk the role of the opposition in political processes.

Klockner addressed the issue of Russia's hybrid warfare, noting that it has now evolved into a new dimension.

"This is not only a challenge to Ukraine's territorial integrity – it goes beyond that. Russian aggression directly affects us, Europe and Germany," she said.

According to her, hybrid warfare seeks to create uncertainty, destabilize democracies, and undermine them from within through disinformation, fake news, cyberattacks, airspace violations, and the infiltration of societies. She called on the EU and NATO to be fully prepared for these threats.

Klockner stressed that Ukrainian soldiers are not only defending their country and sovereignty but also acting as a shield for freedom and democratic values, safeguarding Europe and Germany as well.

"A strong, sovereign, and democratic Ukrainian state is not a bonus for Germany and Europe - it is essential for our security," Klockner said.
