Protests in Austria call for end of genocide on Palestine
(MENAFN) Thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered in Vienna on Saturday, calling for an end to what they described as Israel’s genocide in Gaza and demanding that Austria impose sanctions on the country.
The protest, organized by over 50 civil society groups, saw participants waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans like “Boycott Israel” and “Europe funds, Israel bombs.” Banners read messages including “Stop the genocide in Gaza, sanctions now” and “Austria, you cannot hide; you support genocide.”
Marching to the streets housing Austria’s Chancellor’s Office, Foreign Ministry, and Presidential Palace, protesters pressed for immediate action against Israel and highlighted the plight of Palestinians.
Catholic priest Franz Sieder addressed the crowd, detailing decades of what he called inhumane treatment and virtual enslavement of Palestinians. He labeled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “one of the era’s worst criminals,” accusing him of killing 60,000 people, including 20,000 children, and criticized Austria’s government for its silence on the situation.
Sieder also welcomed the recent ceasefire in Gaza and emphasized the importance of granting Palestinians democratic and social rights.
Trade unionist Axel Magnus condemned Austria’s pro-Israel stance, arguing that despite claims of neutrality regarding the Gaza conflict, Chancellor Christian Stocker and Foreign Minister Meinl-Reisinger compromise it by participating in international drone and arms conferences.
