Trump Holds Talks with Winner of Nobel Peace Prize
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump revealed Friday that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado personally phoned him shortly after winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, reportedly dedicating the award in his honor.
“The person who actually got the Nobel Prize called today, called me and said, ‘I’m accepting this in honor of you, because you really deserved it’,” Trump said during remarks to reporters, as reported by media.
Describing the exchange as “a very nice thing to do,” Trump added, “I didn’t say, ‘Then give it to me,’ though I think she might have. She was very nice.”
Trump emphasized his ongoing support for Venezuela's opposition movement, stating, “I’ve been helping her along the way. They need a lot of help in Venezuela, it’s a basic disaster. So, and you could also say it was given out for ’24 and I was running for office in ‘24.”
In a separate interview with media, Machado confirmed her recent conversation with Trump, though she declined to elaborate on its content. “I’m grateful to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause,” she stated.
The announcement of Machado’s win drew criticism from some corners of Washington. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung accused the Nobel Committee of allowing ideology to influence its decision. “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” Cheung posted on social media.
Adding to the global reaction, Russian President Vladimir Putin commended Trump during a visit to Tajikistan, saying the U.S. leader was “really doing a lot to resolve complex crises.” Trump later reposted the footage on his Truth Social platform, captioning it: “Thank you to President Putin!”
Analysts believe the Nobel Committee's choice may signal a deeper diplomatic intent. “It seems to me that the Nobel Committee would prefer that both the United States and the Venezuelan opposition continue to fight peacefully for change,” Benjamin Gedan, a former National Security Council official focused on Venezuela, told media.
