Pakistani security forces have taken control of 19 Afghan border posts in a powerful counteroffensive following unprovoked shelling and firing from across the frontier, security sources confirmed late Saturday.

Security sources said that Afghan forces suffered heavy losses, with several posts destroyed and abandoned. Most Afghan soldiers and Taliban fighters fled, leaving behind bodies and damaged positions.
The operation, they added, marks a major success for Pakistan's border forces. The counteroffensive involved the use of artillery, tanks, and both light and heavy weaponry. Air and drone strikes were also carried out to target hideouts of the so-called Khawarij (deviant militants) and ISIS affiliates near the border.
