Andhra Pradesh: 8 killed in fire at crackers unit

At least eight people were killed and three others sustained injuries following a catastrophic fire at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

The fire accident occurred around 1:00 pm on 7 October at Sri Ganapati Grand Fire Works.

According to the police, the incident was triggered when a spark ignited the existing stockpile of firecrackers. He explained, "The spark was produced while stuffing a cracker with the chemical, which resulted in the catastrophic explosions and the massive fire accident."

As the firecrackers and chemicals caught fire and began exploding, thick plumes of white smoke billowed from the unit, accompanied by flames that spread in the lush green village .

Superintendent of Police Rahul Meena confirmed that the unit, which had reportedly been operating in the firecrackers business since 1932, was a licensed one. However, Mr Raghuveer observed that the unit had been repeatedly warned, twice in the previous fortnight, and had also been served notices by Revenue Department officials.

The manufacturing unit functioned out of asbestos sheds, which were seen burning even as smaller firecrackers continued to burst in the aftermath of the fire. Following the incident, locals used a motor to pump water from a nearby tank in an attempt to extinguish the blaze.
