Explosion in Tennessee results in multiple deaths, missing people

(MENAFN) A massive explosion at a military explosives plant in rural Tennessee has resulted in multiple fatalities and left several individuals unaccounted for, according to local authorities on Friday.

The explosion occurred at around 7:45 AM at Accurate Energetic Systems, a defense and aerospace contractor located in McEwen, Tennessee. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the blast as "devastating," explaining that it leveled one entire building at the facility. “We do have several people at this time that’s unaccounted for,” Sheriff Davis said during a press briefing. “We can confirm that we do have some that are deceased, but we're going to go back and, like I say, talk to these families, notify these families, and let these families know what's going on.”

The process of identifying those who are missing or confirmed dead is still underway. Davis also issued a warning about the possibility of additional smaller explosions as emergency responders continue to battle the flames at the site. However, he assured the public that there are no immediate concerns about larger blasts occurring.

Authorities confirmed that the company is fully cooperating with emergency services as the situation continues to develop. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
