Qatar Welcomes OPCW's Executive Council Adoption Of Of Decision On Destruction Of Remaining Chemical Weapons In Syria

The Hague: The State of Qatar has welcomed the adoption by the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), at its 110th session, of the decision entitled "Accelerated Destruction of Any Remaining Chemical Weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic." The decision was adopted by consensus among the member states.

In its capacity as the state representing the interests of the Syrian Arab Republic at the OPCW, Qatar submitted the draft decision to the Executive Council, as part of its support for international efforts aimed at eliminating any remaining chemical weapons and promoting constructive cooperation between States Parties and the Organisation.

The decision was jointly sponsored by 51 countries, including both the State of Qatar and the Syrian Arab Republic.

Qatar emphasized that the broad consensus achieved around this decision reflects the commitment of States Parties to a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility, as well as the international community's determination to move forward in closing this file in a manner that supports the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Qatar also expressed its appreciation for the positive cooperation shown by the Syrian Arab Republic with the OPCW during the related discussions, which contributed to the adoption of the decision.

The State of Qatar reaffirms its full support for the OPCW in carrying out its mandate and values the constructive collaboration of the States Parties in reaching this consensus.

Qatar underscores the importance of continued collective action to ensure the complete elimination of any remaining chemical weapons, thereby enhancing international peace and security.
