(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (KUNA) -- Indonesia's tsunami early warning system on Friday issued an alert for the Talaud Islands in North Sulawesi following a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake in the Philippine Sea.
Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Division at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Daryono, said in a live update that residents in Tahuna and Manado felt the tremor, though there are no reports of casualties or damage.
He noted that tsunami sensors detected slight sea-level changes minutes after the quake, classifying the event as a "minor tsunami." The system confirmed water level rises consistent with model projections.
The quake was described as shallow, caused by reverse-fault activity, and centered about 275 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island at a depth of 58 kilometers.
Authorities urged residents in coastal areas of the Talaud Islands to remain cautious and move to higher ground until the tsunami warning is lifted.
No aftershocks have been recorded, and monitoring teams continue to observe sea-level instruments for further changes. The Talaud Islands, located near the convergence of the Eurasian and Philippine plates, are known for frequent seismic and tsunami activity. (end)
