
Qatar Hosts Side Event With ITLOS President During ABLOS Conference
Doha, Qatar: The President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), HE Judge Tomas Heidar, participated in a side event held within the framework of the 12th IHO-IAG Advisory Board on the Law of the Sea (ABLOS) Conference, which took place on October 7–8, 2025.
The event, titled“Is UNCLOS Fit for Purpose in Modern Times? Achievements, Challenges and Future Pathways,” was organised in association with the Qatari Standing Committee of the Convention on the Law of the Sea at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his address on“The Role of ITLOS in the Peaceful Settlement of Maritime Disputes,” the Judge underscored the Tribunal's pivotal role in advancing international peace, justice, and cooperation in maritime affairs. His lecture also explored key themes, including the development of international maritime law, mechanisms for peaceful dispute resolution, and emerging challenges facing ITLOS.
Commenting on the event, Dr. Talal Abdulla Al-Emadi, Member representing Qatar University in the Qatari Standing Committee of the Convention on the Law of the Sea, said,“In Qatar, we remain committed to connecting our students at all levels with leading voices in global legal practice.”
The session highlighted Qatar's continued engagement in promoting dialogue and education on international maritime law and peaceful dispute settlement.
