(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- The Swedish Academy announced on Thursday that the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2025 have been awarded to Hungarian author Laszlo Krasznahorkai, "for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art."
In its statement, the Academy said that Krasznahorkai is "a great epic writer in the Central European tradition that extends through Kafka to Thomas Bernhard, and is characterised by absurdism and grotesque excess," noting that "he also looks to the East in adopting a more contemplative, finely calibrated tone."
The statement added that the Nobel laureate "has drawn inspiration from the deep-seated impressions left by his journeys to China and Japan, giving his writing a meditative and richly symbolic quality."
Among his most notable works is the 2003 novel "A Mountain to the North, a Lake to the South, Paths to the West, a River to the East", a mysterious and lyrical tale set southeast of Kyoto, regarded as a prelude to his major work "Seiobo There Below" (2008), a collection of seventeen stories arranged in a Fibonacci sequence exploring the role of beauty and artistic creation in a world of blindness and impermanence.
The Academy affirmed that this work, together with his epic quintet, represents the pinnacle of Krasznahorkai's literary achievement, as it "leads the reader through a series of 'side doors' toward the inexplicable act of creation."(end)
