Draft of Israel-Hamas agreement gets revealed by media
(MENAFN) A ceasefire proposal announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly includes a major Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza and the release of remaining hostages within days, according to multiple media outlets.
An Egyptian source involved in the negotiations told a news agency that the deal envisions a “complete ceasefire” and a “gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army from 70% of Gaza.”
Meanwhile, an Israeli media organization reported that under the plan, Israeli forces would pull back to a designated line within 24 hours, retaining control over about 53% of the enclave. The withdrawal would reportedly include Gaza City and several central areas.
According to another news agency, Hamas would release all surviving hostages within 72 hours of the Israeli government’s approval. In exchange, Israel would free 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and 1,700 detainees arrested since 2023, including all women and minors. Israel believes that about 20 of the 48 hostages still held by Hamas are alive.
Announcing what he called a breakthrough in the talks, Trump told a news outlet that hostages could be freed as soon as Monday, pledging that Gaza would be rebuilt afterward.
“Gaza is going to be a much safer place… Other countries in the area will help it reconstruct because they have tremendous amounts of wealth,” Trump said, without naming the countries expected to participate.
Despite reported progress, key issues remain unresolved — including Gaza’s future administration and the fate of Hamas, which Israel has vowed to eliminate. Trump’s original peace plan proposed a limited administrative role for the Palestinian Authority, conditional on significant reforms.
The Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military campaign has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, and caused catastrophic destruction across Gaza.
