Ukrainian MPs vote done proposal to nominate Trump for Nobel Prize
(MENAFN) Ukrainian lawmakers have voted down a proposal to nominate US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, according to reports. Trump has often asserted that his international mediation efforts make him deserving of the prestigious award.
The initiative, introduced in the Verkhovna Rada last month, was backed by MPs who credited Trump with attempting to mediate the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev. However, only 132 deputies supported the measure—insufficient for its adoption—effectively ending Ukraine’s effort to endorse Trump for the honor.
Several foreign governments, including Pakistan, Cambodia, Israel, and Gabon, have already expressed public or formal support for Trump’s candidacy. In March, US Congressman Darrell Issa lauded his “historic role in ending wars,” while in July, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally handed Trump a nomination letter during a White House dinner.
The American president has repeatedly argued that he deserves the peace prize, declaring that he “ended eight wars in eight months.” He further stated that denying him the award would “insult” the United States, citing his mediation attempts in the Middle East, Central Africa, and Ukraine as evidence of his contributions.
Despite this, Trump has insisted that the honor would not be for himself but for the country, acknowledging that “they’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing.”
Before returning to office, Trump vowed to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours—a statement he later described as metaphorical. More recently, he has expressed frustration over the lack of progress toward peace and has not succeeded in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza.
While the Nobel Committee in Oslo keeps its list of nominees confidential in accordance with its rules, betting agencies have reportedly placed Trump among the long-shot contenders. The Peace Prize laureate is expected to be announced on Friday.
