Italian PM get reported to ICC over involvement in Gaza’s genocide
(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni revealed on Tuesday that she, along with two of her ministers, has been reported to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged complicity in genocide in Gaza.
Meloni stated that the complaint also names Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Roberto Cingolani, CEO of Italian defense company Leonardo. “I don’t think there’s any other case in the world, in history even, of such a charge being made,” she said during the talk show Porta a Porta, without specifying who filed the case.
The prime minister emphasized that no new arms shipments to Israel were authorized after October 7, 2023, when West Jerusalem launched large-scale airstrikes and a ground operation in Gaza following the Hamas attack. She claimed the ICC complaint was lodged by political opponents and denied any complicity in genocide on her part or that of the other accused.
The ICC, established in 2002 under the Rome Statute, prosecutes genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Reports indicate that 123 countries have ratified the treaty and are full members, while major powers—including Russia, China, India, the US, and Israel—have not signed or ratified the agreement.
While the Italian government previously supported Israel in the conflict, it has recently criticized what it describes as the disproportionate nature of the offensive.
Nevertheless, Italy has maintained diplomatic and commercial ties with Israel and has not joined other Western nations in recognizing Palestinian statehood.
