Lai Ching-te urges Trump to convince China to renounce use of force
(MENAFN) Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te has called on US President Donald Trump to help convince China to permanently renounce the use of force against Taiwan. Speaking on the US podcast The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton, Lai said that if Trump succeeds, he would surely win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Lai emphasized Taiwan’s sovereignty and independence, stating that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other, and that Taiwan is not a part of China and China does not have the right to invade Taiwan. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has not ruled out military action for reunification. Taiwan, separated from the mainland by the Taiwan Strait, has insisted on its independence since 1949.
He criticized China’s military exercises around Taiwan, saying they undermine regional peace and stability, and stressed that Taiwan’s efforts to protect its democratic way of life should not be seen as a provocation. Even though Taiwan is facing increasing threats from China, Lai said the country has not given up on seeking peace and mutual prosperity across the strait, noting that peace is priceless and that there are no winners in war.
Taiwan celebrates its national day on October 10, amid rising tensions and ongoing US-China tariff negotiations. Lai concluded that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are essential for global security and prosperity, but achieving it requires both commitment and strength.
