Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Jolts Northern Papua New Guinea
(MENAFN) A powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 in magnitude rocked northern Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Initially reported as a 6.7 magnitude quake, the USGS later revised its assessment to 6.6.
The tremor occurred at a depth of 99.4 kilometers (61.7 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface, around 26 kilometers (16.1 miles) west of Lae, the coastal capital of the country's Morobe province. Lae, with a population of 76,255, is Papua New Guinea's second-largest city.
No immediate reports have emerged of damage or casualties following the event.
The USGS did not issue a tsunami warning in the wake of the earthquake, and both the Philippines and Australia have confirmed there is no tsunami threat to their regions.
Situated along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," Papua New Guinea is a hotspot for seismic activity, as this region experiences a high frequency of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
