Malawi Grapples with Surge in Mpox Cases

(MENAFN) Malawi is grappling with a rising number of mpox cases, with the capital, Lilongwe, emerging as the epicenter, as per the latest report from the Public Health Institute of Malawi (PHIM).

The outbreak, which began on April 17, has now resulted in 128 confirmed cases across the country. Of these, 104 cases have been recorded in Lilongwe alone. The disease has claimed one life so far.

In a Monday update, PHIM confirmed the detection of two new cases at separate clinics in Lilongwe, involving a 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl. Both cases were diagnosed after local health teams conducted routine checks.

According to the update, all confirmed cases have no known history of international travel, suggesting community transmission is ongoing.

Mpox cases have now been reported in ten of the country's districts, prompting continued health interventions as authorities battle to contain the spread.
